Ford adding app integration to 3.4 million cars
Ford will extend its AppLink system to cars with an older generation of Sync.

Ford previously demonstrated its ability to let owners of its vehicles do retroactive software upgrades to infotainment systems. Now, the company will let owners add a whole new feature set, Sync AppLink, to existing cars.
Ford issued a press release today saying that owners of 2010 model year cars will be able to download Sync AppLink and load the app integration system into their cars. As with previous updates, owners should also have the option to let dealers do the software upgrade.
Sync AppLink supports integration with over 60 apps running on iOS or Android devices. With either type of phone connected to the car, the driver can control supported apps through voice commands and some infotainment controls. Supported apps include Pandora, Glympse, NPR, Aha Radio, and MOG.
Sync AppLink first became available on the 2011 Ford Fiesta. As of the 2014 model year, Sync AppLink is available on most Ford cars, ranging from the Fiesta to the F-150.
The download will let owners of existing cars from 2010 and later add AppLink to models that can support it. Ford has not released specifics yet about which cars can support the upgrade, although the cars must have the Ford Sync system.
