The New 2014 Kia Rondo
The Kia Rondo is back, substantially improved from the rather uninspiring design of its former generations. All three trim grades of this new version of the Rondo (Si, SLi, and Platinum) offer one power-train choice: A 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine that produces 164 hp and 156 lb feet of torque. All trims come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission, but buyers can opt for a 6-speed manual as well, similar to the Mazda5.
The Kia Rondo’s new design weighs notably less than former generations did. Weighing in at 3,500 lbs or less, the 2014’s various trims are between 85 and 120 pounds lighter than earlier models, making all trims feel light and nimble on the road. This lighter weight has also improved fuel economy, giving the automatic a rating of 26/37 mpg (city/hwy) with 31.5 combined, and the manual a rating of 25/38 mpg, 31.5 combined. An added plus is that the Rondo takes regular fuel; the high-compression/direct injection engine does not need expensive premium gasoline.
Along with its dramatic new exterior design, the 2014 Kia Rondo’s interior is also substantially upgraded, from the dated rounded plastics of former generations to a more luxury, high-tech layout and design. Softer, higher-quality materials are everywhere in the new interior, as well as several new family-friendly features such as a cooled glove compartment for family snacks, a second-row under-floor storage area, and a rechargeable flashlight with a charging socket conveniently located right in the cargo space. Every trim includes luxury-feel features such as heated driver and front passenger seats, A/C, tilt/telescope steering wheel with built in audio controls, and much more.
A feature the new Rondo shares with its former versions is that it still comes in either five- or seven-seat options; seats are still easy to get in and out of, due to the Rondo’s oversized doors and a low floor. Just as with many of the Kia Rondo’s competitors’ 3rd-row seating, the rear seating is less than roomy, and is best suited for young kids or smaller (not claustrophobic!) adults. Cargo space in the 7-seater Rondo is lacking (only 8.1 cu. ft) when the 3rd row of seats is up, but when the 3rd row is folded down, it converts to three times the space (32.2 cu. ft) for luggage, sports equipment, pets, or other cargo for family outings. And if there is a lot of stuff to be hauled and few passengers, all reclining seats can be folded flat to provide a whopping 65+ cu. ft of space.
The 2014 Kia Rondo’s closest competitors are the Mazda5, which offers a standard six seats to the Rondo’s 5, and the Dodge Journey, a more traditional, slightly larger SUV. In comparison, though, the interior of the Rondo gives a superior, more luxury feel, as well as a more comfortable ride and quieter cabin. With other contenders for the top spot in the compact SUV market, such as Ford’s Transit Connect wagon and Nissan’s NV200, the 2014 Kia Rondo has its work cut out for it. Its new, dramatic design and well-thought-out, high quality interior features will help keep the Rondo near the head of the pack.
