2022 Acura MDX – First Drive
Acura’s Best Cross-Over Yet
Acura has been very busy overhauling their lineup and amongst them is the well-anticipated 7-seater MDX that has been due for quite some time. Needless to say, the all-new MDX delivers with handsome styling cues and proven technology borrowed from the recent RDX and TLX models. Above all, the MDX has always been about performance, and needless to say, the MDX’s got that covered with a 290 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 and a shift-eager 10-speed automatic transmission.
More demanding drivers can also opt for the performance tuned Type-S trim that comes with a turbocharged V6 that makes 355 horsepower. Equipped with the MDX is also the available Super-Handling (SH-AWD) system for added traction and handling capability.
Under test is the MDX Platinum Elite trim that comes equipped with LED fog lights, colored heads-up display, Surround-View camera system, ELS-Studio Audio Sound System, Genuine wood grain trim and 16-way power adjustable front seats.
Powertrain
Unlike the downsized 4-cylinder turbocharged engine on the RDX, Acura has retained the naturally aspirated V6 engine that produces a respectable 290 horsepower and 267 lb.ft of torque. While most competitors only offer an 8-speed transmission, the Acura MDX has gone above and beyond with a 10-speed automatic transmission to squeeze every bit of performance out from the V6 engine. All-wheel drive comes standard in North American models, but if you live in the States, the MDX can be configured in front-wheel drive as well. Still, the Super-Handling (SH-AWD) all-wheel drive system is preferred due to its added traction but also improved handling performance with its unique ability to deliver up to 100% of the rear wheel torque to its outside wheels for increased lateral cornering force.
Three drive-modes are available via a large drive-mode push-rotary knob dial located on the front center console to allow you to select between ECO, Normal or Performance mode. The steering wheel, throttle response and suspension damping can also be independently configured for further customization as well via the infotainment touchscreen.
Interior and Tech Features
With design cues taken from the RDX, the MDX now looks much more modern and sophisticated compared to its previous age-old generation. A mixture of wood grain, aluminum trimming, black lacquer polished plastic and leather paneling can all be found within the cozy and contemporary cabin space. The front quilted leather bucket seats are comfortable and holds you in tightly with good lateral support that are also 16-way adjustable for optimal comfort.
Second row seating fits two full size adults nicely but third row seating are ideally reserved for kids due to its tighter squeeze. Third-row seats are easily folded down via a spring-loaded latch lever accessible from the rear and the second row seats can be collapsed just as easily as well for added cargo space.
The 12.3″ infotainment system has been completely revamped with snappy screen transitions and eye-candy animations. Menus are navigated with a capacitive touch pad similar to that of the Lexus series with push button shortcuts located around the touch pad area for ease of access. It works great for selecting different menus; albeit the slight difficulty in typing address in the navigation. Thankfully, the included navigation system can be voice-activated and was quick and accurate to voice interpretation under test.
An included colored heads-up display that projects vehicle information and navigation directly onto the front windshield also comes standard with the MDX Platinum trim.
Test Drive and Final Thoughts
The ultra-light steering was immediately noticeable and for some, may be too much for one’s liking. Still, the MDX’s acceleration was responsive and snappy thanks to its uninterrupted V6 engine and snappy 10-speed gearbox. The SH-AWD system also shows support when throwing the MDX into a corner; thereby activating the torque vectoring system.
Acura has nailed the aesthetics of the MDX with its clean lines and contemporary approach, but there’s still work to be done, namely tuning and refinement of the steering system. Nevertheless, the wait is over and the MDX is certain to pave the way for a fun and exciting full-crossover experience.
