2024 Honda HR-V – Test Drive
Overview
The HR-V exemplifies what Honda does best and it’s essentially a subcompact variant of the very popular CR-V. It’s practical, fuel efficient, and it’s even got plenty of storage and space for the typical everyday use. Power might be a bit sluggish running in at just 158 horsepower, and we’re bit bummed out that an available hybrid version isn’t available in North America. Despite all that, the HR-V still comes in a very attractive and affordable price tag starting in at just $26,450.
Trims
Three available trims are available with the base LX starting at just $26,110 with the EX-L at $29,500. We like the Sport trim as it sits right in between at a reasonable $27,500 price tag, which comes with enhanced exterior styling and larger 18″ wheels.
Powertrain
Powering the HR-V is a no-frills 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with just a mere 158 horsepower. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but the HR-V is both small, and light enough to carry its weight and passengers around efficiently. Speaking of which, that’s what the HR-V scores high on. The HR-V gets a very respectable 29 mpg combined city and highway drive economy.
Despite its basic engine configuration, the HR-V does offer better weather immunity with its available all-wheel drive upgrade.
Interior and Tech Features
For someone who’s looking for simplicity, it’s not bad. As a matter of fact, the HR-V borrows many design elements from its re-designed Civic such as the honey-comb style heat vents, and clean climate control center console.
Plenty of small storage space makes the HR-V practical and the rear-seat legroom and additional storage space in the back isn’t bad either. All in all, the HR-V gets the job done with minimal fuss.
Despite its base-level status on Honda’s lineup, the HR-V still gets a standard 7.0″ infotainment touchscreen. A larger 9.0″ touchscreen is available for a better media experience. Both screen sizes come equipped with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The upper EX-L trim also gets an added perk with smartphone charging pad on the front center console.
Test Drive and Final Thoughts
The raw and lethargic response from the HR-V is immediately noticeable, but you quickly get used to it. While the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine only gets 158 horsepower, the HR-V still manages to pull its weight rather effectively, and even efficiently.
Road experience feels similar to that of the Honda Civic with minimal cushioning from road chatter and wind noise, but the overall car feels very predictable and easy to drive.
Overall, in consideration to its price point, we didn’t find much to complain about. The HR-V looks good on the outside, and it upholds its promise with plenty of everyday road use and practicality for years to come.
