The Sports Sedan on Steroids
Here’s one you really don’t see everyday. It’s the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio It’s also a mouthful, all you really need to know (for now) is it’s got a monstrous twin-turbo V-6 pushing out a whopping 505 horsepower on a properly-tuned platform. It doesn’t get any better than this, and while it’s an Alfa Romeo, the Giulia Quadrifoglio stacks right up against the big boys leagues with the Mercedes AMG and BMW M performance series.
Trims and Pricing
Alfa Romeo celebrates its 100th year anniversary with an exclusive 100th Anniversario trim in which only 100 units will be built. Upgrades are mostly cosmetics with exclusive gold-painted brake calipers, carbon fibre grille and mirror caps, gold stitching and unique wheels. The standard Quadrifoglio trim comes priced in at $81,855 with the exclusive 100th Anniversario trim at $88,505 – not cheap!
Powertrain
At the $80k price mark, the Giulia Quadrifolgio meets high expectations and it starts off with the engine. It’s a twin turbo-charged 2.9L V-6 capable of pushing out 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Mated to the engine is a carefully-tuned eight-speed automatic gearbox feeding torque exclusively to the rear wheels.
Another unique feature to its performance-oriented powertrain is its carbon-fiber driveshaft that increases stiffness while shedding excess weight. Advanced adaptive damping suspensions also takes care of any road demands on the fly to ensure the Quadrifoglio remains planted to the ground around corners.
A limited-slip rear differential and quad exhausts complete the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s road authority mission statement.
Interior and Tech Features
The Giulia Quadrifoglio’s interior means business with a homogenous black interior, a heavily dyed-red engine start button on the steering wheel and massive aluminum-plate paddle shifters. The seats steering wheel and dashboard are layered with suede leather. One of the highpoints noted in our books were the beautifully-crafted circular heat vents with lines hinting that from an Italian-derived supercar.
The Giulia Quadrifolgio comes standard with a 8.8″ infotainment display whose menus are navigated via a rotary knob located on the center console. While the interface is relatively intuitive, the software performance and features were a bit lacking and some menus were a bit slow to load. Nevertheless, both Android Auto and Apple Carplay are supported and you also get a peppy 15-speaker Harmon Kardon audio sound system as standard.
Test Drive and Final Thoughts
First and foremost, the visual statement is an absolute treat. We especially loved the available deep blue tone and gun-metal grey satanic-style rims that turned plenty of heads on the road.
On the gas, the Quadrifoglio doesn’t hesitate and accelerates effortlessly almost as if you floated through thin air, and the 8-speed automatic transmission is an absolute joy to use especially with its massive aluminum paddle shifters. Oh, and the noise – the exhaust tone is an optimally-tuned trumpet played by the highest level of musicians.
It’s undeniably fast that practically skips through time. I hate to make criticize something so ironically good, but there’s also an aspect of miss-ed excitement. I want to feel the road and driver engagement like that of a directly-linked human-mechanical relationship, but it just wasn’t there. Not to say the Quadrifoglio isn’t capable at all, but bulk of what it has to offer can only ultimately be revealed on the track. On the street, not so much.
