2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge – Test Drive

Volvo’s Approach to EVs is Astonishing!

Volvo’s gasoline-powered XC40 was amongst the cutest and aesthetically pleasing cross-over we test drove back in 2019. Fast forward just a couple years, the 2022 Recharge trim is fitted with a top-tier all-electric powertrain boasting 402 horsepower via an AWD configuration with a dual electric-motor configuration, translating to an incredibly on-road driving experience.

New for model year 2022 is also the highly-anticipated Google-based infotainment system and a plethora of standard driver-assistance and tech features across its lineup. Buyers get the option to choose between the Plus and Ultimate trim priced at $56,395 and $59,245 respectively. Opting for the Ultimate trim for just an extra $2,850 gets you larger and enhanced 20-inch wheels, automatic high-beam headlamps, an upgraded Harman/Kardon audio system, adaptive cruise control, and a semi-autonomous driving mode.

Powertrain

Despite its lower-entry model, the XC40 Recharge EV trim does not skimp out on performance. The standard dual-electric motor AWD configuration produces a whopping 402 horsepower with exceptional grip on all four wheels. With these numbers, the XC40 Recharge trim is reported to achieve a 0-60 mph acceleration in an incredible 4.3 seconds, which is within the high-performance sports car realm.

In terms of range, the XC40 Recharge gets 223 miles with its onboard 78kWh lithium ion battery pack. That puts it on par with the Audi E-Tron and Jaguag I-Pace, but still falls short to the Tesla Model-Y that gets more than 300 miles on a full charge. Recharge time can take upwards between 40 to 72 hours, but is also compatible with a CCS1 (Combined Charge System) DC fast charger with power ratings of up to 150 kW that reduces the charge time down 3-4 hours for an 80% charge.

Interior and Tech Features

Volvo’s interior continues to impress with its clean and luxurious feel. Plenty of cargo storage are conveniently fitted within the cabin and its center console is cleaned up with basic climate and media controls and a simple toggle position-based gear lever. Amongst its list of great cabin features is its suede-stitched seats that are exceptionally comfortable and soft to the touch. Add the thick-grip and comfortable leather-wrapped steering wheel to the mix as well.

An all-digital instrument cluster is seamlessly connected to its google-based infotainment software that renders Google Maps as well as basic vehicle speed and motor power consumption. A heads-up display unit is also available for purchase that projects vehicle sped and navigation directly on the driver-side’s windshield.

Volvo’s 12.3″ portrait-style Sensus Connect infotainment software has been completely replaced with Google Android Automotive. That means, it gets you Google Maps, Google Voice, Google Apps with the ability to synchronize your Google user account. With Google Voice, users can also use voice-activated commands to turn on and off climate controls as well.

Removal of an entire engine in the front bay also leaves room for extra cargo space; otherwise known as a “frunk” in EV terms.

Test Drive and Final Thoughts

Without a doubt, the XC40 is very fast, with all of its 402 horsepower put to work at at a quick jab of the throttle. Despite wet road conditions during test drive, the XC40 Recharge still grips and bites hard onto the road with minimal traction loss thanks to the instantaneous reaction of of the dual electric motors powering the front and rear wheels.

Driving the XC40 is easy. Volvo has even completely removed the engine start-stop button completely and one of the biggest perks with model year 2022 is integrated Google Maps that’s indefinitely better than any other infotainment map software available with its unmatched map details and responsiveness. That just leaves us with a minor pet peeve with the absence of climate control tactile buttons on the center console as using the infotainment screen for heating and cooling is a bit cumbersome.
