2022 Mazda CX-30 – First Drive

Fresh Looks with Better Practicality

The Mazda CX-30 adds another tasteful alternative to its cross-over lineup. While similar to the Mazda 3, it sits slighter taller with more ground clearance, giving it a bit more practicality and cargo capacity as a whole. It’s got the same composed looks and luscious interior (if you opt for the GT Trim), but doesn’t quite handle as well as the 3 with its taller dimensions. Still, the 250 horsepower GT Turbo AWD makes plenty of good acceleration with a good engine tone included.

Both US and Canadian trims now enjoy standard i-Activ AWD system across all trims. Model year 2022 introduces an available Carbon Edition model with Polymetal Grey exterior paint coupled with Garnett red leather upholstery with 18″ jet black rims. Pricing for trims in the US are as follows in USD:

Base$23,725
Select$26,125
Preferred$29,175
Carbon Edition
$29,815
Turbo
$31,725
Premium
$32,025
Turbo Premium
$34,325
Turbo Premium Plus
$35,925

And Canadian Prices below

GX$26,100
GS$29,100
GS Luxury Package$31,300
GT$34,500
GT Advanced Visibility Package$35,300
GT Turbo$37,700

Our favorite on the list is the highest CX-30 GT Turbo with enhanced Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbocharged engine delivering 250 horsepower (on 93 octane)and 320 lb.ft of torque – a substantial increase from the non-turbocharged engine outputting just 186 horsepower. Also included is the Carbon Edition/GT Advanced Visibility Package Polymetal gray paint and Garnett Red interior with 18″ jet black rims as well as heated door mirrors, larger exhaust ports and a TURBO badge on the lift gate.

Powertrain

US buyers have both the Turbo Premium and Premium plus while Canadians are limited to just the GT Turbo trim if the turbocharged 2.5L Skyactiv-G engine is preferred outputting a very respectable 250 horsepower and 320 lb.ft of torque. Otherwise, a naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5L engine will come standard with an output rating of 186 HP which is not bad. All trims will come equipped with i-Activ AWD and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Non-turbocharged engines receive a combined 26 mpg while the turbocharged engine will get slightly less at 30 mpg.

Interior and Tech

The interior remains one of the major highlights of the Mazda CX-30 that’s crafted with upscaled materials and an overall calm and composed design. Despite a homogenous black interior, the cabin space still feels sophisticated with soft touch materials and a unique combination of materials used.

GT Turbo trims also receive an upgraded 12-speaker BOSE audio sound system, premium leather upholstery, power lift-gate and dual-zone climate controls.

All trims receive an 8.8″ infotainment screen running on the latest Mazda Connect software. An elegant dial push knob located on the center console allows you to switch between menus on the infotainment system with ease. The Mazda Connect software will be compatible with both Android Auto and Apple Carplay. We found the Mazda Connect software not only to be one of the nicest user interface, but also one of the fastest as well.

Test Drive and Final Thoughts

While the GT Turbo trim pushes with ease thanks to its turbocharged 2.5L Skyactiv engine, it doesn’t offer the handling we’re looking for. Still, the CX-30 feels smooth and composed in city driving and the cabin space remains quiet and composed throughout our daily test drive. Rear seating could use a bit more legroom, but the rear trunk space offered good cargo capacity and can be increased with its 60/40 rear folding seats.

Overall, we liked the way the Mazda CX-30 drives overall and makes for a unique subcompact cross-over SUV that offers a good balance of both comfort, quality and pleasure. The only downside to note is the lack of a more modern fuel-efficient hybrid option.
