2022 Mazda CX-3 – Review and Test Drive

A Fun and Practical Subcompact with Little Compromise

The CX-3 is both fun and functional all while remaining affordable without too much compromise. Compared to the slightly more expensive CX-30, the sits slightly higher offering more headroom and the interior isn’t too shabby either. Compared to the more preferred Mazda 3 Sport, the CX-3’s feels less refined with a noisier cabin. Still, the CX-3 does what Mazda does best with peppy handling and despite having just 146 horsepower, the engine is eager and enthusiastic on throttle demand. It also looks great with a modern and contemporary look. Rear seating and cargo space can be a bit of a concern, but the CX-3 makes for great overall go-around, get-around city zipper. The Mazda CX-3 can be had for as little as $21,965.

Powertrain

All trims come with a naturally aspirated SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine producing just 146 horsepower with available AWD for added traction and stability. AWD configurations are limited to a 6-speed automatic while FWD models (only available in the US) can be configured with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The engine sounds harsh especially at the jab of the throttle, but it’s quick to respond with unobstructed and peppy acceleration. It’s also quick on its feet, but with a higher center of gravity and non-performance suspensions, the CX-3 is susceptible to body when cornering. Steering also feels a bit springy compared to the more refined Mazda 3, so this is where the cost cutting is identified during our test drive.

Interior and Tech

Overall cabin interior is function albeit a few quirky elements such as the inconsistent air vent design and lower-grade materials. Single-mode climate controls are made up of simple buttons and dials and the overall quality isn’t too shabby. Front passengers can enjoy great visibility with a slightly more upward seating position, but rear seating can be a bit of a tight squeeze with less legroom. Still, the 60/40 folding rear seats and rear hatchback access makes the CX-3 practical in most cases.

Fitted inside the CX-3 is an older generation 7.0″ infotainment touchscreen controlled by a rotary knob controller located on the center console. While the looks and feel are dated compared to its latest generation, all the basic tech media and amenities are included including Android Auto and Apple Carplay as well as integrated navigation.

Final Thoughts

Despite a lower sub $20k price point, Mazda managed to produce a fun and functional subcompact crossover that looks great without too much sacrifice. Sure, the engine is a bit less tamed while wishing Mazda hadn’t skimped out on us with a dated infotainment system, but the CX-3 does perfectly what it’s advertised to do. All said, the CX-3 is best suited for entry level buyers or family starters on a budget and you really can’t go wrong here. Mazda has continued to offer the CX-3 in 2022, but the US has discontinued the model in 2021. It will be replaced with the slightly cleaner and more modern CX-30.
