While most now consider it old school, the station wagon still has its place. That’s because it still offers plenty of cargo space while still sitting low to the ground. It’s a great alternative to the modern but over-populated cross-over with the benefit of better handling and control while seating 5.

The Cross Country trim is the higher up model of the standard V60 with the only difference of a taller ride height of 8.3″. Standard interior amendments appoint a checkered weave cloth-like seating material that feels durable to the touch, but may be a bit rough and even hideous to some. Black cloth, or leather seating material is available though. Still, the rest of the charcoal and cream interior makes an overall pleasing visual impression.

Cabin tech gets a prestigious Bowers and Wilkins audio system run by a large tablet-like infotainment system that replaces conventional button consoles. That also means cabin heating controls are accessed through the touch screen as well. Android Auto and Apple Car play also makes for a seamless smartphone connectivity.

The Drive

Safety lies in the backbone of the Volvo brand, and the V60 still feels like it. The old-school long-tail station wagon feel is still there and the overall chassis feels solid. But the long wheel-base also calls for a lack of maneuverability. Minus a few audible mechanical quirks and minor stuttering, the V60 feels safe, capable and easy to drive thank its turbocharged T5 engine and and AWD powertrain.

Final Thoughts

Base priced at $48,900, the Volvo V60 Cross Country may appeal to families with a higher budget that values safety, space and comfort. It doesn’t quite make it up to the luxury realm, and the price speaks for it. But it comes very close, and the contemporary artistry makes the Volvo V60 Cross Country a unique automotive ownership experience.
