2016 Hyundai Elantra – Test Drive, Review, Ratings, Spec

Elegance On a Budget

Stepping into the subcompact category reveals quite a number of choices; especially now that luxury automakers are catching on to offering smaller and more affordable entry models such as the BMW 1 series, and even the Mercedes B class.  This is where mainstream manufactures come in with an upper competing hand by offering equivalent quality at a fraction of the price tag.  The Hyundai Elantra is just a prime example.

There is still a price gap between entry level luxury and the Elantra.  Strictly speaking, mechanical performance on the Elantra is only offered with a 2.0L DOHC engine and a standard 6 speed automatic transmission.  This limits the power capability of a very shallow 147 horsepower and 132 lb.ft of torque.

Low Key Styling

Looks on the Elantra won’t entice a jaw drop effect, but its low key character and modernized signature features help bring out a distinctive look from the crowd. That is, comparing it to a dense population of subcompact competitors such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda 3.

Interior is where the best bang or the buck can be realized. Our tester was the Limited model that comes with leather interior, the whole jazz of Sirius XM and bluetoth connectivity, voice navigation and safety features including blind spot and rear view camera. Driving arrangement is feels spacious thanks to a clean cabins pace equipment layout. Center panel is completely flat and all amenities are well laid out.

Tech features come in on a rush with the Limited model as well, and an added injection of $3k is well worth it considering that you do get one of the best infotainment systems out there that has proven to be user intuitive and responsiveness over the years.

Low Power, But is All You Need

Power factory doesn’t awe me with a 2.0L V4 with only 173 horsepower to spare available on the GLS model and up. Anything lower is equipped with a 1.8L V4 producing 143 horsepower. A quick glimpse on these numbers is enough to convince anyone that the Elantra won’t deliver an enthusiastic drive; though the 6 speed automatic can be swapped for a 6 speed manual to raise the fun factor a bit.

Steering receives a sensible applause with decent handling and precision. But harsh cornering does reveal some of its flaws and limited capability through means of body roll. On a brighter side of things, the brakes do provide plenty of stopping power.

Final Thoughts

You’re not going too big of a thrill from stepping the gas on this one unfortunately. Considering the fact that it is an entry level car that’s meant to offer quality amenities on a budget minded buyer. Though strictly speaking of performance, the Civic, or even Corolla will offer a more enthusiastic drive. Where the Elantra compromises for is a much more up scaled cabin space and a rock solid feel you won’t get in the former two – the feel from just pulling the door handle is enough to prove the statement true.

Due to a shorter wheelbase, there is a slight shortage of legroom in the back. Horsepower is also a diminishing factor with only 173 to spare. It’s not a complete lost cause, but you do need to pre-plan a bit to spin up the engine to 6,200 RPM to unlock its peak power. With that said, city driving may be fine, but entry and merging onto freeways may be a bit tough on this little guy. On a brighter note, fuel efficiency is benefited from equipping the Elantra with a smaller scale engine.  My limited model is priced in at a starting price of $25,849.
