The Toyota Camry Dares To Be Cool

Either keep up with the trend, or be left behind time. In today’s generation, it’s all about tailoring to the younger crowd, and that’s exactly what the all-new and revamped Camry’s is betting heavily on. While the ten different models and multiple trim configurations can make your head spin, it is ultimately the XSE model that brings the wow factor.

More to just looks, the all new Camry now comes standard with Entune 3.0 infotainment app that promises to enhance the audio media experience and the included Scout GPS system bring access to a plethora of useful features including the latest fuel prices, stock market results, Yelp, and even weather and traffic information. The XSE model receives upgraded Entune Plus treatment which adds Entune Safety Connect with automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle locator, emergency assistance button and enhanced roadside assistance.

Bringing In Exotic Looks

It’s as if the flood gates protecting traditional design rules were completely opened. The front fascia now houses modern exotic flavors with two massive front air intakes, sharp LED headlights and an ultra wide front grille. But it really is the XSE model that takes you on for a wild visual ride with its dual tone color scheme, enlarged 19″ wheels and chrome exhaust tip.

You can even score red leather interior if you’re feeling courageous. The interior across multiple models remain relatively bland and the molding on the steering wheel doesn’t exactly promote neither a quality or sporty ride. Still, the space within provides plenty of comfort for both front and rear passenger seats with adequate legroom for longer trips and the center dash touchscreen is well laid out for access to all things climate and media related. Tech features aren’t skimped out either. A heads up display is also included in the XSE model conveniently displaying the engine and vehicle speed information directly onto the windsheid.

The Drive

It’s the 301 horsepower V6 is what makes the Camry special, and you can only get that with the XSE or XLE model. While ahybrid option powered by its renowned Synergy Drive system as well as a 203 horsepower V4 are also possible, it really is the V6 that makes the Camry special. An 8 speed automatic transmission is also introduced into the latest generation that offers quick shifts and improved fuel economy.

Acceleration provides adequate pull with the V6, but cornering and handling could be tightened up to better match its athletic looks. Activating Sports mode via pressing down on the Sports button in the center console does sharpen up driving charisma, but its performance capability is still limited to just latching its engine revs to higher RPM’s and slightly re-adjusting the steering tightness. Despite the attempt, torque steer and body roll are still noticeable when pushing the Camry too hard around a bend and has trouble responding quickly on directional changes on the steering wheel.

Given the suspension setup, the Camry is, (and generally has always been) given a neutral ride – neither sporty nor comfort. The overall ride just feels bland with not much to offer. With that said, it almost feels disappointing that a sports sedan equipped with a powerful V6 lacks the cornering and handling element. The Hybrid model that we also test drove feels better matched for its design and purposes with exceptional fuel economy that achieves a respectable 5.1 L/100 km rating. Handling feels more or less the same.

And it’s not cheap either. Our Camry XSE equipped with a V6 comes in at a hefty $42,072 while our Hybrid counterpart lists for $35,832. Between the two, it just makes more sense to opt for a hybrid option. Paying that much for a sports sedan with not much to show in the performance category is a pretty big blow in our books.

The real problem lies in the fact that the Camry trying to do too much. With up to 10 models and three powertrain configurations to choose from, it’s just mind-strangling to say the least. The real question is if the Camry is trying to be a comfort or sports sedan? Right now, it’s neither of the two, and frankly speaking, there are options out there that better pinpoint its role, namely the more sportier Mazda 6, or Kia Optima.
