It doesn’t take much to fall for the IS350.  Spanning respectable credits in the realms of luxury, styling and performance, the IS350 redefines the Lexus automotive company with daring aspirations.  Speaking of which, that was my general impression back in 2014 when its first model was released.  Despite minimal alterations to a nearly perfect creation of the IS350 over the last few years, my emotions still tingle with excitement every time I have the opportunity to step into one.

For 2018, the IS350 remains relatively intact with the exception of Adaptive Front Lighting system that automatically projects the head lamps towards the vehicle’s line of path, and the backup camera is now standard across its entire model lineup.  And with the help of GPS and cellular technology, Lexus also introduces the Enform safety and service system that provides communication access to a 24/7 emergency response team and in-depth vehicle maintenance and health statistics all through the center console system.  Both the Enform Safety and Service system is now complimentary for the first 10 years of ownership.

Bold and Beautiful

Carried over from a front facial overhaul from last year, the front grille size steps up from size medium to massive, and the engine now sheds off more heat and breathes in more fresh air from the re-engineered air intakes.  Sizing proportions are just about right, and the snug fit in the perforated leather seats rightfully places you in a soft and cozy space.  Larger passengers in the rear seating area could lead to a bit of a tight squeeze though, but its severity can be minimized with front passengers making more legroom by moving the front seats forward through its motorized seat adjustments.

Where the Real Fun Starts

Performance is where the IS puts it money where its mouth is.  AWD capability is offered in both the IS300 and IS350 variation and the biggest difference between the two is a 2.0L Inline V4 with a twin scroll turbo and the more favorable naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 with the latter producing 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.  The fine and intricate engineering workmanship gives a bespoke treatment of its horsepower range tailored to five driving modes of ECO, Normal, Snow, Sport and Sport + selected from a twist knob on the center console.

Acceleration remains subtle and relaxed in normal and Eco mode.  That is, until you flick the spring-loaded drive selector to the right twice to activate Sport + mode to awaken the demon within.  Throttle response is immediately sharpened while the electric power steering tightens up in preparation for aggressive maneuvering.  Suspension system is also stiffened up through its multi-link Adaptive Variable Suspension if you’re behind the wheels of the F-Sport model.  And you get a rapid and buttery smooth 8-speed Select Shift + automatic transmission to harness your acceleration.

It’s not exactly a sharp mutation effect when the sport mode is activated, but the sharpened driving character is notable mainly the engine revs are latched longer at higher revs in between shifts to prolong the power output.  And regardless of what driving mode you’re in, the adaptive variable suspension does a fine job in keeping all four wheels planted into the ground even around sharp bends without wildly throwing your head around.  AWD traction also means you can gun the throttle with full confidence around bends without worrying too much about spinning out.  However, even with traction control turned off, we still noticed a bit of under steering going on.  Pressing down on the spring-loaded drive selector knob conveniently resets the driving mode back to normal for everyday city cruising comfort.

Our IS350 AWD F-Sport model comes priced in at $57,971, which certainly doesn’t come cheap.  With more horsepower and driving transparency from driver to car, it’s almost a no brainer to opt for the IS350 AWD F-Sport model.  Unfortunately, rising prices in gas prices is now also a factor to consider.  With that said, the RWD configuration can save you a few grand and a simpler drivetrain means more transparency and fun for the driver.  But despite the rising fuel costs, we still think the naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 engine is the one and only heart and soul that brings out the true and exciting identity of the IS sports sedan.
